Vanishing Continuation
2018–19
for sinfonietta
Program Note
The idea behind this piece originated with my interest in the Taiwanese identity. Over a period spanning centuries, this identity has been constantly shifting; it was shaped time and again by historic events and external influences. The situations are so complicated that we usually speak of them in a political way; however, as a Taiwanese people our self-identification requires more intimate terms. We have our own, distinct culture. Whether aboriginal or the immigrant descendants from Southeast Asia, the Taiwanese have their own values and cultural heritage to stand for. On this theme I have woven struggle, fear, fury, powerlessness, and a small amount of relief into the structure of a musical piece in attempt to express my concern for and pay tribute to genuine Taiwanese values in the form of an abstract, artistic creation.
